Minecraft heads to the classroom.
'Minecraft' has been used fairly frequently as an educational tool over the years, particularly with the use of a modified version of the game called 'MinecraftEdu'. Microsoft has now bought 'MinecraftEdu' and is now working on a new version aimed pirmarily at schools 'Minecraft: Education Edition', which will have a free trial this Summer, with individual and group pricing models for those who want long-term access to follow shortly after.
It will include features not seen in the standard game such as maps with a coordinated system to help students navigate together with teachers, as well as digital portfolios. Microsoft stresses that they've worked closely with TeacherGaming to develop entirely new features for the 'Education Edition'.
Microsoft has always supported schools heavily through, so positioning 'Minecraft' as an educational tool is a smart move.
