Mod retains 3DS controls.
'Super Smash Bros.' is out on the 3DS (check out the review here), and unfortunately, the popular handheld's flat controls are not the necessarily the way that most would choose to play the game. Bear in mind that the still-to-come Wii U version is getting an official adapter meant to to allow not one, but four GameCube controllers. Meanwhile, the circle pad on the 3DS was probably not meant to stand up to furious 'Smash Bros.' bouts.
Fortunately, avid Nintendo modder, dekuNukem, has developed a mod that allows the user to plug a GameCube controller into a 3DS. (check out the round-up of info here.)
Now, while anyone can attempt this mod with the help of the schematics and some necessary, but inexpensive parts, this is a serious mod suitable only for the experienced. Correctly executing the mod will yield a corded, detachable GameCube controller that can work without interfering with the onboard 3DS controls. (USB power is required for the mod) But to get to the right 3DS pinouts requires a deep dissection of the conosole, and a few one-way modifications.
