Clarification on the recast given in Gamespot interview.
'The Taken King' is fast turning into a drastic rework of the entire 'Destiny' experience, especially for wayward high-level players left stranded and grinding after 'Dark Below'. Among all the other sweeping changes coming to 'Destiny' when 'The Taken King' launches next month, Bungie announced recently that Nolan North was taking over voice duties for the Companion Previously Known As Dinklebot. Might be understandable for the expansion, since Tyrion Lannister's time is probably scarce. But Bungie has actually re-recorded every single one of Ghost's lines, from the start of the game onward, which is virtually unprecedented. The question, of course, is why. Jesse van Diik, the game's lead concept artist, gave Gamespot some answers.
"We wanted to improve the sense of what goals players were chasing after. Because very often we would find that they were chasing after a gun, or following a specific quest line. What we wanted to do was chart that more clearly, and ultimately that led to something that we call 'questification.' All of the 'The Taken King' content has been given that treatment... And when we started working on that, we were actually so satisfied with that formula that we went, 'Wait a minute, why don't we give all our previous content the same treatment? Why don't we questify that as well?'"
The result was Bungie going back to the drawing board and rewriting all of Ghost's dialogue from the ground up. Which, obviously, would mean some minor retconning with the voice of Ghost. "When we started looking at voice actors, and we decided to work with Nolan North, the consistency of the entire universe is very important to us, so we decided to give the full treatment to all of our previous content too. [This] is why Nolan North is also your Ghost from the very moment you start [the game]."
if nothing else, the new dialogue seems like a damn fine reason to maybe start up a new character and run through 'Destiny' from the start all over again. Still. You were too beautiful for this world, sweet Dinklebot. May flights of Moon wizards wing thee to thy respawn.
