Solutions for both Steam and non-Steam versions.
Bohemia Interactive has released a new update (1.63) for 'Arma II,' which among other fixes, replaces the GameSpy functionality with Steam. Bohemia Interactive wants players to understand the how and why of this fix. With Steam taking on the game's ultra important match-making abilities, players will need to own 'Arma 2' on Steam. Fortunately, for those who purchased a retail copy of 'Arma 2,' (and the expansions), all they need to do is activate their CD key on Steam to get access to the Steam version.
Meanwhile, older titles like the first 'Arma,' 'Arma Cold War Assault,' and 'Take on Helicopters,' which rely on GameSpy, can be played on private servers, and existing servers can be found here. Bohemia Interactive's FAQ should be help for players new to this workaround.
