DISH is now poised to be the first pay-TV provider to release a 4K set-top box.
DISH has announced the upcoming launch of its 4K Joey. The Ultra HD set-top box is designed to integrate with DISH’s Hopper Whole Home HD DVR system.
“Our new 4K Joey offers the most versatile, future-proofed 4K setup for our customers," said Vivek Khemka, senior vice president of Product Management. "It's easy to install and works with the most 4K televisions, so no matter what brand customers bought over the holiday season, they can enjoy content through DISH."
The 4K Joey will support all HDMI 2.0/ HDCP 2.2-compliant televisions. The device offers Ultra HD video support, full Joey functionality for standard and high-definition televisions, and supports playback at 60fps in 10-bit color. In addition, the set-top box also includes a picture-in-picture option that allows viewers to watch two HD sources side by side at the same time. Under the hood, the 4K Joey uses a Broadcom dual-core chipset and Broadcom 7448 dual-core ARM processor.
DISH's 4K Joey is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2015. Announcements regarding specific Ultra HD content sources and providers will be made closer to that time.
