Coming Soon to Blu-ray: CHERNOBYL, SUPERGIRL, and More
HBO's critically acclaimed miniseries headlines our latest roundup of upcoming Blu-ray releases.
Pre-orders are now available for several new Blu-rays from Flicker Alley, Synapse Films, Mill Creek Entertainment, Scorpion Releasing, Zeitgeist Films, MPI, HBO, and Warner Brothers.
Here's a full rundown of recently revealed details and title announcements:
First up, Flicker Alley has announced plans to bring Fridrikh Ermler's Fragment of an Empire starring Emil Gal, Sergey Gerasimov, and Yakov Gudkin to Blu-ray on August 9. Supplements will include:
- Audio Commentary: Commentary track featuring Russian film historian and curator Pater Bagrov and film restorer Robert Byrne on the collaborative efforts that went into preserving Fragment of an Empire.
- Restoring Fragment of an Empire: A demonstration by film historian and preservationist Robert Byrne on the film's restoration.
- "A Masterpiece in Soviet Cinema": A new booklet essay on the historical importance of this film in Soviet Cinema.
- "Notes On the New Score": A short essay by composers Stephen Horne and Frank Bockius on their new score for Fragment of an Empire.
- "Adapting Vladimir Deshovov": A short essay by composer Daan van den Hurk on his recent adaptation of Vladimir Deshevov's 1929 original piano score.
- Rare Image Gallery: A slideshow presentation of vintage marketing materials, original poster artwork, and more!
Meanwhile, Marcel L'Herbier's L'Argent starring Brigitte Helm, Marie Glory, and Yvette Guilbert will then follow on August 16. Supplements will include:
- NEW SCORE BY OLIVIER MASSOT, preformed by the National Orchestra of Lyon under the direction of Timothy Brock
- Vintage score by Rodney Sauer, preformed by the Mont Alto Orchestra
- The Making of L'Argent (Autour de L'Argent): A pioneering documentary, directed by L'Herbier's assistant Jean Dreville, featuring incredible footage of the cast and crew during the actual production as well as the director's comments recorded later in 1971 (39 minutes). Presented with two new music scores.
- Prometheus Banker (Prométhée Banquier): A perfect thematic complement to L'Argent, complete with new restoration, this short film by Marcel L'Herbier tells the story of a banker-seducing vampire (15 minutes).
- Souvenir Booklet: Featuring an essay by Mireille Beaulieu and collection of unique photographs and promotional material recently discovered in Mrs. L'Herbier's collection.
Synapse Films is set to release Sergio Garrone's Django the Bastard starring Anthony Steffen, Paolo Gozlino, and Luciano Rossi on August 13. Supplements will include:
- Audio Commentary from Film Historian and Author Troy Howarth
Mill Creek Entertainment is prepping Fred Schepisi's Roxanne (VHS Retro Look) starring Steve Martin, Daryl Hannah, and Rick Rossovich for Blu-ray on August 13.
Likewise, Joseph Ruben's True Believer (VHS Retro Look) starring James Woods and Robert Downey Jr.is also set to arrive on Blu-ray on August 13.
In addition, the label is bringing Jonathan Kaplan's White Line Fever (VHS Retro Look) starring Jan-Michael Vincent, Kay Lenz, Slim Pickens, and Don Porter to Blu-ray on August 13.
Meanwhile, Sean S. Cunningham's The New Kids (VHS Retro Look) starring Lori Loughlin, James Spader, and Shannon Presby is scheduled for release on August 13 as well.
And rounding out Mill Creek's upcoming August 13 lineup will be George Englund's The Ugly American starring Marlon Brando, Eiji Okada, and Sandra Church.
Scorpion Releasing is bringing Amy Holden Jones' Love Letters starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Stacy Keach, and Amy Madigan to Blu-ray on August 27. Supplements will include:
- NEW Interview with co-star James Keach
- Original Theatrical Trailer
Zeitgeist Films is prepping Derek Jarman's The Garden starring Tilda Swinton and Johnny Mills for Blu-ray on August 27. Supplements will include:
- Audio commentary by film historian Samm Deighan
- After the Garden - Richard Heslop remembers Derek Jarman's later days
- Anything Can Happen, Richard Heslop on working with Jarman
- David Lewis remembers The Garden
- James Mackay remembers The Garden
- The Other Great Masterpiece - John Maybury considers Jarman's enthusiasm for gardening

In addition, the label will release Derek Jarman's Blue (1993) starring Tilda Swinton on August 27 as well. Supplements will include:
- Bliss (1991, an audio recording of a concert that would become Blue)
- David Lewis remembers Blue
- Glitterbig (1994, a compilation of Derek Jarman's home movies, scored by Brian Eno)
- Hard to Imagine (John Maybury recalls Jarman's journey towards Blue)
- James Mackay remembers Blue
- Simon Fisher Turner remembers Blue
- Derek Jarman blue plaque unveiling in London
MPI has announced plans to release Howard M. Gould's The Six Wives of Henry Lefay starring Tim Allen, Elisha Cuthbert, Andie MacDowell, Paz Vega, and Kelli Garner on August 27. Supplements have not been detailed.
In addition, the label is bringing Vicente Amorim's Good starring Viggo Mortensen, Jason Isaacs, and Jodie Whittaker to Blu-ray on August 27. Supplements have not been revealed at this time.
HBO is prepping True Detective: The Complete Third Season starring Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, and Stephen Dorff for Blu-ray on September 3. Supplements have not been detailed at this time.
In addition, the label is set to release Chernobyl starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Paul Ritter, Emily Watson, Jessie Buckley, and Adam Nagaitis on October 1. Supplements have not been revealed yet.
Warner Bros. is bringing The CW's Supernatural: The Complete Fourteenth Season starring Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins to Blu-ray on September 10. Supplements will include:
- Supernatural Homecoming: Exploring Episode 300 (NEW Featurette)
- The Winchester Mythology: The Choices We Make (NEW Featurette)
- Supernatural 2018 Comic-Con Panel
- Audio Commentaries with Talent & Producers
- Deleted Scenes
- Gag Reel
Likewise, the studio is also releasing TNT's The Alienist: Season One starring Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning on September 10. Supplements will include:
- Behind the Scenes Documentary
Meanwhile, The CW's Supergirl: The Complete Fourth Season starring Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, and David Harewood will hit Blu-ray on September 17. Supplements will include:
- The Best of DC TV’s Comic-Con Panel San Diego 2018
- Inside the Crossover: Elseworlds
- Villains: Modes of Persuasion
- Deleted Scenes
- Gag Reel
And rounding out Warner's upcoming lineup will be The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Series (Limited Edition) starring Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, and Kaley Cuoco on November 12. The package will include:
- Nearly 12 hours of extras plus an additional disc with 3 never-before-seen featurettes including a retrospective
- A premium lay-flat book with pop-up art featuring the entire cast
- A 32-page episode guide with an introduction from Creator & Executive Producer Chuck Lorre
- A digital copy offer for every episode!
