'The Binding of Issac: Rebirth' is being developed free of Flash constraints, promises co-op, a second expansion, and a tweaked art style.

In a postmortem for Game Developer magazine, the game's creator, Edmund McMillen details the original game's unambitious origins, and a desire to carry the successful design and charm of the game on with a more sound technical base.

After Nicalis, the console publisher for 'Cave Story' and 'VVVVVV,' approached McMillen about a console version, he responded with a list of criteria. "I had a few strict guidelines to make sure an Isaac remake was perfect. I wanted the game to feature the second planned expansion that I couldn't do in the Flash version, I wanted it to feature local co-op, I wanted the graphics to be totally remade in 16-bit but still look and feel like the Flash version, and finally, I didn't want to deal with anything when it came to business. Nicalis has agreed to these terms, and development has started on The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth."

The target platforms remain announced and possibly unset with Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and Apple all mentioned as in the mix.
