The companies have completed the first US-based demonstration for an Ultra HD over-the-air test signal.
Sinclair Broadcast Group and Technicolor have announced the successful deployment of Technicolor's ATSC 3.0 4K UltraHD testbed platform through an over-the-air broadcast. The platform uses Scalable HEVC (SHVC), MPEG-H audio, and MPEG-MMT transport to enable delivery of live 4K content.
"Technicolor has created an integrated platform, not just a single component such as audio or video, which enables us to do real-world deployments and testing of this exciting next generation ATSC 3.0 technology," said Vince Pizzica, senior executive vice president of Corporate Development and Technology for Technicolor.
Technicolor's platform was integrated into Sinclair's OFDM transmission system in Baltimore, Maryland to conduct the test. This marks the world's first successful broadcast of Scalable HEVC compression, and the first successful integration of MPEG-MMT A/V transport technology.
"Sinclair continues to work to bring future value to all broadcast stakeholders, a future where HDTV and new services can be reliably delivered to tablets and portable devices, and 4K UltraHD to our home audience," stated Mark Aitken, Vice President of Advanced Technology for Sinclair.
There's no word yet on when customers can expect to receive actual 4K broadcasts, but this test will help pave the way for more ATSC 3.0 live experimental transmissions for Ultra HD scalable video and audio both over-the-air and to mobile devices.
