The rumors are true: Sony today confirmed that it will pack the first
500,000 units of the PlayStation 3 with the Blu-ray version of 'Talladega
Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.'
Though 'Talladega Nights' was announced a couple of weeks back
for a December 12 release on Blu-ray, those fortunate enough to get their hands
on a PS3 in November will get a copy of the Will Ferrell blockbuster almost
a month early.
Certainly, the strategy makes sense -- though Sony is still touting the PS3
as a game console first and foremost, it is also seen as the linchpin in Blu-ray's
planned domination of the pre-recorded high-def market. And with 'Talladega
Nights' earning over $100 million at the U.S. box office alone, it is a solid
hit in which to bundle with the PS3.
The news was unveiled by the company at today's Sony Gamer's Day conference
held in San Francisco, California.
