The deal adds a good chunk of streaming content, but don’t get excited about having 'Avatar' on day one.
If you’re a fan of the Netflix streaming service, the new deal that Netflix signed will come as good news to you. You may already have noticed that a few new shows have been added, including '24,' 'Bones' and 'Lie to Me.' Netflix has also added movies from Universal like 'Gosford Park' and 'Being John Malkovich.'
The downside to the new deal is that the now standard 28 day delay in rentals has been added to new releases from both companies. Among the first films that this will apply to is the mega-hit ‘Avatar.’ While James Cameron’s special effects spectacle will hit Best Buy on April 22nd, you’ll have to wait four extra weeks if you want it from Netflix.
Based on what Universal’s Craig Kornblau had to say, the options were a 28 day delay or nothing. “We're extremely pleased to have reached this mutually beneficial arrangement that will allow Netflix subscribers to continue enjoying Universal's film content on DVD and Blu-ray,” said Kornblau.
