A new LCD screen geared toward virtual reality use is now in development.
Japan Display has announced the development of a new 3.42-inch low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCD designed for virtual reality head mount displays. The screen will feature specific attributes geared toward delivering optimal VR performance.
These VR-friendly characteristics include ultra-high resolution, high-speed response time, high refresh rate, and a blinking backlight. When traditional smartphone displays are used with VR headsets, users can often see the pixel structure of the screen, but thanks to the new LCD's 651ppi (pixels per inch) ultra-high resolution display, users will hardly be able to see the pixel structure. In addition, the company also plans to develop an even higher resolution screen with 800ppi in the future.
Meanwhile, the new LCD's high refresh rate of 90Hz, high-speed IPS panel with a 3 msec response time (black-to-white), and blinking backlight technology (with a 10% duty rate, typical), will help to reduce motion blur and system latency, ensuring a seamless virtual reality experience with various VR apps. Here's a rundown of the screen's full specs:
- Display size (diagonal): 3.42 inches
- Resolution format 1440 x RGB x 1700
- Pixels per inch 651ppi
- Refresh rate 90Hz
- Response time 3 msec (black-to-white) 6 msec (worst case)
- Brightness 150cd/m2 (with 10% duty rate blinking backlight)
- Contrast ratio 700:1 (Typ.)
Specific headsets and mobile devices that will use the new 3.42-inch low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) TFT LCD have not been announced yet. Current VR offerings include the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, and the Google DayDream View. The Gear VR supports the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6, S6 edge, and S6 edge+. Meanwhile, the DayDream View currently supports the Google Pixel.
