‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ 1.03 Recap: “There’s No Sun in Your World”

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ 1.03 Recap: “There’s No Sun in Your World”

After a particularly strong second episode, ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ dives back into mediocrity with a rather standard third installment. Entitled ‘The Prisoner’, Episode 3 proves to be a by-the-numbers affair that doesn’t do a whole lot to advance the ongoing storylines.

‘Game of Thrones’ 3.05 Recap: “By What Right Does the Wolf Judge the Lion?”

‘Game of Thrones’ 3.05 Recap: “By What Right Does the Wolf Judge the Lion?”

While this week’s new episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ may not have the sort of spectacular, epic climax like we saw the previous week, it’s chock full of important story points that are well balanced by some great character moments.

‘Community’ 4.11 Recap: “And That Is What I Would Be Saying If I Gave a Crap”

‘Community’ 4.11 Recap: “And That Is What I Would Be Saying If I Gave a Crap”

I know that I may sound like a broken record at this point, but this season of ‘Community’ has consistently been at its best when it keeps things focused on the group and keeps the group at Greendale. This was perfectly displayed in last Thursday’s episode, ‘Basic Human Anatomy’. Not only was it one of the funniest episodes of the season, but it was the one that felt the most like it could have come from the Dan Harmon era.

‘Hannibal’ 1.05 Recap: “This Is My Gift to You”

‘Hannibal’ 1.05 Recap: “This Is My Gift to You”

As I mentioned in my last recap, NBC pulled the fourth episode of ‘Hannibal’ from the planned broadcast schedule, allegedly out of “sensitivity” to the victims of the real-life Boston Marathon bombing, and skipped right to Episode 5 instead. The decision doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. As far as I’m aware, the storyline didn’t have anything to do with a bombing, and the new episode still features plenty of graphic violence. Disrupting the show’s continuity only serves to confuse fans who’ve followed it thus far.

Bates Motel 1.06 Recap: “He Was a Real Prize”

Bates Motel 1.06 Recap: “He Was a Real Prize”

A lot happens in the sixth episode of ‘Bates Motel’, as some storylines (seemingly) wrap up, answers are provided to others, and some are ignored completely. (More about that later.) Major spoilers follow, so read on if you dare….

‘Hannibal’ 1.03 Recap: “Damage the Organs, You Ruin the Meat”

‘Hannibal’ 1.03 Recap: “Damage the Organs, You Ruin the Meat”

Dear NBC Marketing Dept., I’m about to give you a very nice pull-quote to use in your advertising. All I ask in return is that you attribute it appropriately. Are you ready? Here you go: In just three episodes, NBC’s brilliant ‘Hannibal’ is already better than any of the Hannibal Lecter movies. How’s that work? You’re welcome.

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ 1.02 Recap: “That’s What Serpents Do”

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ 1.02 Recap: “That’s What Serpents Do”

After an uneven pilot episode, the second episode of ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ (entitled ‘The Serpent’) is a much more even affair. However, it still has a lot of plot threads that viewers need to weave through.

‘Game of Thrones’ 3.04 Recap: “You Hold the Whip”

‘Game of Thrones’ 3.04 Recap: “You Hold the Whip”

Well hot damn! For three seasons now, Daenerys Targaryen has felt very remote and disconnected from everything else going on in ‘Game of Thrones’. We’ve known for quite some time that she’ll be an important player in the story at some point, but that point has always felt very far away. This week, her storyline finally kicked into high gear and allowed us to see, for perhaps the first time, just what a threat she truly is.

‘Doctor Who’ 7.10 Recap: “How Do Sharks Make Babies?”

‘Doctor Who’ 7.10 Recap: “How Do Sharks Make Babies?”

Some ‘Doctor Who’ episodes, like last week’s ‘Cold War’, lay out exactly what they’re about in the opening scenes, and play that scenario out to the end. Others start you down one path, and then take an abrupt left turn and lead you down another. Saturday’s episode, ‘Hide’, falls into the latter camp.

‘Community’ 4.10 Recap: “No One Wants to Screw the Group”

‘Community’ 4.10 Recap: “No One Wants to Screw the Group”

Thursday’s episode of ‘Community’, called ‘Intro to Knots’, features Malcolm McDowell tied up in a chair for extended periods of time. Under Dan Harmon, this would have led to a smorgasbord of ‘Clockwork Orange‘ gags, but instead, we get a half-hearted homage to Hitchcock’s ‘Rope‘ that does no credit to either the original film or a show that should have knocked this premise out of the park.
