‘Lost’ in Thought: Across the Sea

‘Lost’ in Thought: Across the Sea

“Every question I answer will simply lead to another question,” she says. You ain’t kiddin’, lady!

After I had expressed some mild disappointment that last week’s episode of ‘Lost’ didn’t address any of the show’s big mythological topics, this week’s episode gives us nothing but mythology. ‘Across the Sea’ is the long-rumored all-Jacob, all-Man in Black episode with (virtually) no appearances from any of the other regular cast. You wanted to know who these characters are and where they came from? Well, here are reams of brand new, never before revealed information about the island’s two most elusive and most important movers-and-shakers. And yet, true to the show’s form, the episode opens up countless new questions while answering very few of the ones we’ve been expecting. (Spoilers after the break.)

The ABC’s of Marketing

The ABC’s of Marketing

“Next on ABC’s Castle…”

Where exactly is the ABC castle, and can I take a tour?

Is anyone as bothered by this as I am? I’m not sure when exactly it started. Is it new this season? Did it start last year? Or does it actually go further back, but somehow I managed to tune it out before now? Whatever the case, lately I’ve been really annoyed by ABC’s incessant need to brand all of its shows with the network name.

The DVR Giveth and the DVR Taketh Away

The DVR Giveth and the DVR Taketh Away

Yesterday, I posted about how DVR overload caused me to lose an entire season of a show I planned to eventually watch. Last night, I was threatened with the same situation. As I started the evening, my DVR was already at 88% capacity, and I had seven new shows scheduled to record. Tried as I might, I could not watch and delete old recordings fast enough to keep up. When my DVR literally hit 99% as two new shows had just begun simultaneously recording, I had to make a fast decision. The oldest program on my DVR, the first scheduled to auto-delete when the drive hit 100%, was ‘Justified’. I like that show and wasn’t prepared to lose it. So I made a sacrifice. Goodbye, ‘Happy Town’.

HD Recap: Modern Family Goes to the Airport

Jay is slumped over counter at an airport bar. He looks at the drink the bartender has poured for him and says, “Could you make it a double? I’m travelling with my family.” That line alone sums up the entire episode.

‘Lost’ in Thought: The Candidate

‘Lost’ in Thought: The Candidate

Time is getting short on ‘Lost’. We’re in the home stretch now. After this week, there are only two more regular episodes and the two-part finale left. This seems like it should be time for the producers to start cranking out the Big Answers, preferably at a speedy clip. This show has a lot of loose ends and unresolved issues. Don’t get me wrong, this week’s episode (‘The Candidate’) is very good, even excellent at times. It has some really powerful moments. At the same time, it’s another episode that advances the mechanics of the plot forward without revealing much about the underlying mystery or mythology. I’m sure that’s being done deliberately to hold the best stuff back for later. Nonetheless, it can’t help but feel a little frustrating at this point. (Spoilers after the break.)

HD Recap: They Should Call It “Crappy Town”

HD Recap: They Should Call It “Crappy Town”

Did’ja see what I did there? I took the title ‘Happy Town’ and changed it to something that sounds similar but means something different. Different and all funny-like. Did’ja get that? Oh, you did? Well, OK then, anyway… ABC’s new mystery thriller series ‘Happy Town’ premiered last Wednesday with an episode called ‘In This Home on Ice’. I’m a little delinquent in recapping it, because I DVRed it and only recently got around to watching. I figured now would be a good time to talk about it, in anticipation for tonight’s new episode. That is, if I had any anticipation for a show I didn’t really care for.

I Swear to God, If They’re All Astronauts on a Spaceship to Mars…

ABC’s new series ‘Happy Town’ premiers tonight. I’ve seen some of the commercials, but I know very little about the show. I gather that it’s some sort of small town, ‘Twin Peaks’-wannabe murder mystery. There are a few interesting actors in the cast, including Sam Neill, Frances Conroy, and Amy Acker. I don’t mind Steven Weber in his post-’Wings’ work. (Liked him a lot in ‘Studio 60′.) Could have potential. I guess I’ll watch.

HDTV Catch-Up: Modern Family

HDTV Catch-Up: Modern Family

‘Game Changer’ (air date 3/31/10) is an episode that really showcases just how entertaining, and how familiar, ‘Modern Family’ can be. It may not have been the funniest episode of the first season, but it’s one that’s easy to identify with, especially for gear nuts. The main thread of this story follows Phil, a self described early adopter.

‘Lost’ in Thought: The Last Recruit

‘Lost’ in Thought: The Last Recruit

Since there’s no new episode of ‘Lost’ this week, I figured this would be as good a time as any to look back at last week’s episode, ‘The Last Recruit’. The past six years have been a long, crazy ride, haven’t they? I have to assume that anyone still watching at this point must be fully vested in the show’s convoluted plotting and complex mythology. I’m not even going to attempt to recap everything that’s happened this season, or explain the business with the “flash-sideways” or the battle between Jacob and the Man in Black. I’ll just assume that you’re already up to speed on that. Instead, let me point out some things that stood out to me in this most recent episode. A warning: If you’re not a die-hard fan of ‘Lost’, you’ll probably have no idea what I’m talking about. (Spoilers after the break.)
