TIFF Journal: The Latest from Tom Tykwer

TIFF Journal: The Latest from Tom Tykwer

German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (director of ‘Run Lola Run‘) tried his hand at selling out to mainstream Hollywood with ‘The International‘. He had only limited success with that, so he’s returned to his art film roots with ’3′, the story of a couple whose long-term relationship has started to fray due to boredom and familiarity. Their lives are complicated further when both partners begin affairs with and fall in love separately with the same man. (Yes, you read that right.) This is a love triangle, but a quite unconventional one.

TIFF Journal: ‘Peep World’ – Great Cast with Little to Do

The Toronto International Film Festival ended on Sunday. By the time you read this, I will have already left the city. I still have several movies to write about, however. So I’ll roll those out over a few extra posts. First, let’s take a peek at ‘Peep World’. Just listen to this cast: Michael C. Hall, Rainn Wilson, Sarah Silverman, Judy Greer, Taraji P. Henson, Stephen Tobolowsky, Kate Mara, Alicia Witt, Ron Rifkin, and Lesley Ann Warren. What a line-up, right? It’s a shame they’re all stuck in such a middling comedy.

TIFF Journal: ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams’ – Werner Herzog Does 3-D

After the insanity of ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans‘, iconoclast director Werner Herzog switches back to documentary mode for his latest film. Today’s coverage of the Toronto International Film Festival takes a look at this, plus a lovely little Canadian movie that will probably never play near you – but should.

TIFF Journal: ‘Black Swan’ – No Ugly Ducklings Here

As I write this post on Tuesday afternoon, I’ve only had time to see one movie so far today. Yes, it’s Darren Aronofsky’s surreal psychological thiller ‘Black Swan’. Does it live up to those crazy trailers or the hype? Read on to find out.

TIFF Journal: ‘Let Me In’, ‘Never Let Me Go’ & ‘The Whistleblower’

Technically, the Toronto International Film Festival opened last Thursday, the 9th. However, Mrs. Z and I didn’t arrive in the city until late on Sunday. We didn’t get a chance to see any movies that night, so our festival-going finally started in earnest on Monday. We did, however, cram in three movies on that first day. Among them were at least two hotly-anticipated titles: ‘Never Let Me Go’ and ‘Let Me In’. Follow after the break for a brief rundown.

Weekend Roundtable: What Should I See at the Toronto Film Festival?

Weekend Roundtable: What Should I See at the Toronto Film Festival?

For the next week, I’ll be on vacation. Mrs. Z and I will be traveling to Toronto to visit friends and to attend the Toronto International Film Festival. This may result in some disruptions to our normal blog posting schedule here at The Bonus View. More importantly, I’ll be seeing a bunch of new movies. So I figured that would make a good Roundtable topic. What should I see at the festival?
