Samsung's "Free the TV" Challenge to Bring More Apps to Samsung Devices[teaser]It's also a great way to win some cash and gear if you're an app maker.[/teaser] App. It's a buzzword that simply refers to a program, but thanks to the iPhone it's taken over our vocabulary. Samsung certainly had that link in mind when it launched Samsung Apps. The Samsung App store has done alright, but it certainly hasn't exploded the way Apple's has, and Samsung would like to change that. They've got a contest running until the end of the month that will reward 14 different app creators with a total of $500,000 in cash and prizes. The first place winner gets $200,000, a 46 inch Samsung 9000 TV, a Blu-ray player and a 3D starter kit. As you'd imagine, prizes get lower from there. That's good news if you own a Samsung television since it means there will be plenty of new content on the way. Starting in November, the apps will be open to public voting, meaning you'll get a say in who gets a $50,000 cash prize. Source: SamsungPosted Thu Aug 12, 2010 at 08:00 AM PDT by: -

Netflix and EPIX Make a Deal – New Movies Streaming in September[teaser]The new agreement will give streaming subscribers access to films like 'Iron Man 2' among others. [/teaser] Netflix knows where its bread is buttered. Sure, you can get DVDs and Blu-rays in the mail from Netflix, but the streaming service is currently the most convenient and cheapest way to rent movies. It's quickly become the thing the company is best known for. That's probably why Netflix felt comfortable making a deal that would pay EPIX $1 billion over the course of the next five years in exchange for streaming rights. That's $200 million a year – not exactly chump change. Under the terms of the deal, Netflix will get the rights to stream movies from Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM just 90 days after they launch on premium TV channels like HBO and, well, EPIX. You'll see new movies start to show up as early as September 1st. Source: EONPosted Wed Aug 11, 2010 at 09:00 AM PDT by: -
