Artist's New Photography Exhibit Features Tube Televisions Powering Off[teaser]The photographer's work will appear in Germany before coming to Washington D.C. in June. [/teaser] High definition televisions are still relatively new on the scene when considered over the course of history, but it's rare to see anything else. LCD and plasma displays have replaced the old technology almost completely. Berlin based artist Stephan Tillmans has put together an interesting series of photographs that might bring up some feelings of nostalgia. His latest exhibit is a collection of photographs snapped just as tube televisions were turned off. The result is a trip down memory lane. The shapes and colors created by a tube TV as it shuts off are incredibly interesting and complex, but there's just one question. Is it art? Apple May Bring AirPlay Video Streaming to Televisions[teaser]Adding this feature could make the iPad and iPhone very attractive options for video streaming sources. [/teaser] If you're not an iPhone or iPad owner, you probably haven't paid much attention to AirPlay. It's a cool idea that currently has fairly limited functionality. A device with AirPlay can stream audio directly from your Apple device without the need for a complicated setup. AirPlay is currently found on a range of devices from iPod docks to receivers from companies like Denon and Marantz. Rumor has it that Apple is going to go one step further and bring AirPlay to televisions. To accompany that, there's word that Apple will begin incorporating video into AirPlay. That means that with an AirPlay enabled TV, you'll be able to stream audio and video from your iPhone, iPod or iPad without having to go through any complicated setup. 'The End of Poverty?' Blu-ray Announced[teaser]The acclaimed documentary narrated by Martin Sheen is planned for Blu-ray in May. [/teaser] In an early announcement to retailers, Cinema Libre will be bringing 'The End of Poverty?' to high-definition on May 24. Filmed in the slums of Africa to the barrios of Latin America, 'The End of Poverty?' explores how the true causes of poverty stem from actions taken during (and since) colonial times to perpetuate exploitation: first by forcing people from their land and their access to natural resources, then through unfair trade, debt repayment and unjust taxes on labor and consumption. This system was carefully built and then maintained with neo-colonial policies such as free market economics, resource monopolies and structural adjustment programs by the international financial institutions. The film has been embraced by activists and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) worldwide for its ‘direct talk’ about the role of debt, free trade, and neo-liberal policies and poverty. Groups including: Action Aid, Amnesty UK, ATTAC, CADTM, Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP), InterAction, Jubilee Debt Campaign, Make Poverty History, Share the World’s Resources (STWR), Tax Justice Network, Transnational Institute, and the UN Millennium Campaign have screened the films as part of their anti-poverty campaigns in the past year. A 398-page companion book, 'Why Global Poverty?' published by The Robert Schalkenbach Foundation with Cinema Libre Studio, provides extended, translated transcripts from over 75 experts and people living in poverty who are featured in the film as well as a substantive introduction to the film by the director, Philippe Diaz. Specs have yet to be detailed, but supplements will include: SPEAKING FREELY, Volume 1 with JOHN PERKINS on Globalization; Extended interview with Director Philippe Diaz; ‘10 Steps to End Poverty Petition’; ‘Changes in Venezuela’ (a look at Hugo Chávez’s reforms and the impact on the country’s poor); Extended Interviews w/ Experts; and Stawi Youth & Adult Centre (Kenya) Profile. Suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $29.95. You can find the latest specs for 'The End of Poverty?' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule, where it's indexed under May 24.Posted Fri Mar 25, 2011 at 06:00 AM PDT by: -

Netflix is Losing Californication and Dexter in New Deal with Showtime[teaser]Both shows will be streaming exclusively on Showtime's own service - Showtime Anytime. [/teaser] Netflix is an obvious threat to premium cable channels. That's something HBO has known since day one, but others like Showtime have been a lot friendlier with the streaming service. That seems to be changing. While the new deal between the two companies will include streaming rights to shows like 'The Tudors' and 'Sleeper Cell,' two of Showtime's biggest shows are being pulled. Both 'Dexter' and 'Californication' are being removed from the service. The deal ends this summer, so if you're watching either show on Netflix, you've got plenty of time to finish. If you haven't started yet, it's time to get on it. Source: Hacking NetflixPosted Thu Mar 24, 2011 at 09:00 AM PDT by: -
