The World War I drama is heading to select theaters in December.
Universal has released the first trailer for 1917. The film comes from director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, Spectre, American Beauty), and is set for a limited theatrical release on December 25, 2019, followed by a wide release on January 10, 2020.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.

Director Sam Mendes co-wrote the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Penny Dreadful). Likewise, Mendes serves as a producer along with Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) via their Neal Street Productions. Additional producers also include Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall), and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
Meanwhile, other crew members include Academy Award-winning director of photography Roger Deakins (Skyfall, Blade Runner 2049, No Country for Old Men) and Academy Award-nominated composer Thomas Newman (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Skyfall).
