"Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks."
It's been pretty clear ever since Microsoft announced a holiday price cut for the Xbox One, along with several promising bundles, that the company wanted really compete through the end of 2014. That effort is already paying off, and there's still tons of holiday shoppingto come.
Today, Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate VP for the Xbox division, announced that the plan is working,
The response to this wave of blockbuster game releases and new bundles has been amazing, and sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect on Nov. 2. Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled, which is exciting as more and more friends will be playing together this holiday. As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks. Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles.
The $50 off offer that is helping to fuel the big sales applies to all console bundles at participating retailers like Amazon. (Other retailers specified by Microsoft include Best Buy, GameStop, Microsoft Stores, Target, Toys ‘R Us, and Walmart.)
As much as it can be tiresome to describe Microsoft's efforts in terms of a console war, it is hard to ignore that for most people (and their families) the purchase of an Xbox One or PS4, is a commitment to an eco-system that may last years. Sony has their own holiday bundle on the way, which adds 'The Last of Us - Remastered' and 'Grand Theft Auto IV' to a PS4 at the price of $399, but that bundle is still in the wings and not at all termed as any kind price cut. With today's news, that emphasizes "sold in to retailers" over customers, it will be interesting to see if and Sony responds.
And then there's the 'Sunset Overdrive' bundle, which includes the white Xbox One console and the game for $349.
Meanwhile, the 'Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare' bundle, which is the only custom art model, and the only one with a 1TB hard drive, includes the game and console for $449.
And finally, just the regular Xbox One is $349, which means those other bundles are a much better value, and will be in short supply first.
