Tyrone Rodriguez of Nicalis, the team primarily responsible for 'The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth,' updated the game's blog this week with some interesting tidbits.
Edmund McMillen's 'The Binding of Isaac' is coming to the PS4, PS Vita and PC in the form of 'Rebirth,' an update with new items, characters, bosses and a refreshing 16-bit take on the game's visuals. Nicalis, known for its console-porting expertise, is taking the reigns, and had a few things to say about it.
First off, the controls are completely customizable on any console you use, though the default button layouts have been set as well.
A couple of consolations are made for the PS Vita version. For instance, the touch screen is used to manipulate the game's map. Once a player chooses whether they like the sticks or buttons for movement and shooting for either version, though, they're meant to reconfigure the buttons for bomb, card and pill usage.
More importantly, however, are the game's "seeds." A seed is a code that recalls an exact playthrough - item drops, dungeon layouts and bosses. 'The Binding of Isaac' is a randomly-generated rogue-like, so to go back and replay it in exactly the way you did before is a compelling feature. The seeds are also a response to the devoted fanbase already finding out a way to manipulate the original game's code and spit out their own seeds. Now it's a part of the game, as NES-style alphanumeric sequences you can write down for later.
Much of the longetivity in the original game came from unlocking new items and finding them randomly in a playthrough. In order to prevent players from manipulating seeds, possibly handing them out to eachother as one run produces better unlocks than another, any items a player doesn't have in a specific seed are replaced with ones that they do.
