The fiercely independent studio remains so.
Coming off an infamous three-game deal with Sony, a deal that lead to 'flOw,' 'Flower' and the impeccable, groundbreaking 'Journey,' developer thatgamecompany has remained relatively quiet, until now. It may not be much, but the implications of the announcement are undeniably good.
"Our studio has entered the next phase of development on our upcoming project and has raised an additional $7 million in funding," reads the update on the developer's site.
"With this new investment, our studio is able to scale up development efforts to focus on making the best game possible in the same spirit as flOw, Flower, and Journey. We’ll also begin laying the infrastructure to self-publish, market, and distribute on our own terms for this next project and beyond."
In essence, it seems, thatgamecompany has managed to remain independent while accumulating a substantial amount of funding for their next project. And that bit about laying the infrastructure for self-publishing? That means the investors behind that $7 million shouldn't have much say on the creative side of things.
Of course, none of this indicates much about what kind of game the studio is making, or when and on which platforms that game will exist. From the same post:
"Since finishing Journey, the team has been hard at work to make an emotionally engaging experience centered around human connections for players of all ages and backgrounds."
