"Strategy is to focus on PS4," says SCE Vice President.
Welp, the question was always hanging in the air if Sony was ever going to do anything with the Vita beyond letting third party devs do the heavy lifting, and today, according to an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment Vice President Masayasu Ito on Japanese website 4Gamer, the answer is a resounding "lol nope."
“Currently, first party studios have no titles in development for PS Vita. Since third parties are working very hard on PS Vita, SCE’s own strategy is to focus on PS4, which is a new platform.”
Business-wise, makes sense. The Vita is a pretty decent success in Japan, and not resting on the laurels of Sony's massive lead on Microsoft worldwide is a sound decision. And the indies and cross-buys PSN has been keeping the Vita fed rather well in Sony's absence. It's still hard to not see the thing as so, so much wasted potential, considering how powerful and versatile it is. Why that system isn't drowning in PS2 ports is baffling.
Still, there's still life in the old girl. The 'Tearaway' redux on PS4 does wonderful things keeping the Vita involved if you've got one, and just recently, Bethesda bragged about nabbing the dude who made Destiny's control scheme work via Remote Play to get the feature working with 'Fallout 4'. It'll be fine.
