The company's new internet TV service for cord-cutters is gearing up for a commercial launch.
Following previous invitation-only tests, Sony has revealed plans to begin offering its PlayStation Vue platform to customers in select markets. The initial commercial launch is expected to hit New York, Chicago and Philadelphia within the next two weeks.
PlayStation Vue will initially only be available through the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The service offers around 75 channels from popular networks like CBS, FOX, NBCUniversal, Viacom, Discovery Communications, and Scripps Networks Interactive. The platform enables viewers to easily search through live and on-demand programming with an intuitive interface and convenient personal recommendations. In addition, the system also allows users to catch-up on programs they might miss by automatically offering the past three days of popular shows for on-demand viewing. Likewise, if customers tag a favorite series they will be given cloud access to episodes of that show for 28 days with no storage restrictions.
Pricing has not been announced yet, but Sony promises transparent costs with no hidden fees, contracts, or installation charges. A full nationwide launch is expected by the end of the year. Likewise, support for the Apple iPad and more non-Sony devices is planned for the future. PlayStation Vue now joins an increasing number of subscription based cord-cutting services, including Sling TV, CBS All Access, and HBO Now.
