The studio has announced a partnership with Dolby.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced a collaboration with Dolby to bring Dolby Atmos soundtracks to their home entertainment releases, including upcoming Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The first title to support Atmos audio will include the studio's previously announced Ultra HD Blu-ray launch lineup: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2,' 'Salt,' 'Hancock,' 'Chappie,' 'Pineapple Express,' and 'The Smurfs 2.'
"By adding Dolby Atmos to our home entertainment content, SPHE has the ability to offer audiences a rich, enveloping sound experience on both physical and digital formats, including the new 4K Ultra HD discs," said SPHE president Man Jit Singh.
Dolby Atmos is a home theater technology that uses object-based mixing to expand audio design with the inclusion of overhead sound. In addition to Dolby Atmos audio, Sony's Ultra HD Blu-ray titles will feature a resolution of 3840x2160 with HDR (high dynamic range), offering four times the resolution of HD along with superior contrast and colors on supported displays. More Sony Ultra HD Blu-ray titles with Dolby Atmos soundtracks are expected to be announced throughout 2016 and beyond.
"With Sony Pictures leading the expansion of 4K Ultra HD for home entertainment, Dolby is thrilled that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has selected Dolby Atmos to deliver a more-immersive next-generation audio experience to consumers, including SPHE’s initial slate of 4K Ultra HD discs," said Curt Behlmer, Senior Vice President, Content Solutions and Industry Relations, Dolby Laboratories.
Full specs, exact release dates, and suggested list prices for Sony's first Ultra HD Blu-rays have not been detailed yet, but the discs are set to debut in early 2016. In addition to Sony, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., and Shout! Factory have also announced Ultra HD Blu-ray launch titles.
