The final tally reached more than $6.3 million.
The 'Shenmue 3' Kickstarter has finally come to a close, and it now stands as the new record holder for the most funded video game on the crowdfunding platform.
With a final funding total of $6,333,295, 'Shenmue 3' has earned the title of the most financially supported video game on Kickstarter, taking the honor away from 'Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night,' the latest project from the producer of the 'Castlevania' series.
The game's crowdfunding campaign launched during Sony's conference at E3 and blew past its original $2 million funding goal in a matter of hours. After the original funding frenzy, series creator Yu Suzuki mentioned some general stretch goals. Reaching $5 million, he said, would mean that "one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality." At $10 million, the game would, allegedly, be able to feature a truly open-world experience.
