It's like alternate history.
Before id Software became the game-changer synonymous with 'DOOM' and 'Quake,' it was known as IFD, In From the Deep. One of the group's crazy ideas was to use their developing tech to create a demonstration prototype of 'Super Mario Bros. 3' rebuilt from scratch on the PC.
Naturally, Nintendo ultimately flat-out rejected the concept, wishing instead to keep such games on Nintendo hardware.
Still, seeing the proof-of-concept now some 25 years after the fact, the characteristics are remarkably uncanny.
