The Korean manufacturer will allocate more money into OLED panel development.
According to a report from Reuters, Samsung plans to invest $3.6 billion into OLED display production. The investment will be made from 2015 to 2017 in an effort to increase component sales in the wake of declining smartphone profits.
The OLED production will primarily feature medium and small sized panels designed for tablets and smartphones, with the goal to manufacture components for Samsung devices and third party products from other companies. The initial production line will likely focus on curved OLED panels, such as the screen featured on Samsung's Galaxy Note Edge. While the company has reaffirmed its commitment to mobile OLED panels, Samsung still has no plans for more large-screen OLED televisions. OLED displays are currently used on several Samsung smartphones and tablets, including the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and the Galaxy Tab S 10.5.
Meanwhile, rival manufacturer LG is also rumored to be investing more money in OLED production. According to the Yonhap News Agency, the company is expected to invest about 1 trillion won this year to bolster its large-screen OLED development.
