Theoretically, you can get all the new characters without spending a dime on microtransactions.
Ubisoft has laid out its plan for post-launch content in 'Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege.' With its release coming at the start of next month, the game will see a total of four new maps and eight new player characters—along with new game modes, weapons, and cosmetic items—rolling out over the course of 2016.
The post-launch content will be divided up into four seasons, each comprising three months of 2016. Each season will include the release of one new map and two new characters. Each new character will come with their own new unique gadget, and each pair of new characters will represent a new counter-terrorist unit. The maps and any new game mode will come free to all players as they are released. Characters and weapon skins, however, will have to be unlocked through time spent in-game.
Players will earn Renown in each game they play. Each post-launch character and most post-launch weapon skins will be available for purchase with Renown. Ubisoft estimates that post-launch characters will cost about 25 hours of gameplay worth of Renown.
If that's too much for players, there is the option to purchase new characters with microtransaction currency, with a post-launch character costing the equivalent of $5. Some higher-tier weapon skins will be purchasable only with this microtransaction currency.
Ubisoft goes into the details of this post-launch content program in the video below. You can find the latest info on 'Rainbow Six: Siege' linked from our Video Game Release Schedule.
