Over 80% of players pirated the game.
Today, tinyBuild announced that their boxing life sim 'Punch Club' has sold over 300,000 copies, which the publisher and developer both view as a huge milestone. (Check out the review here.) However, a high number of analytics were planted into the game, which have now been used to determine that the game has been pirated over 1.6million times. With over 1.1 million pirated copies on PC (including Mac, Linux, and Steam key resellers), and over 500,000 pirated copies on mobile. It's a fascinating post that I'd sincerely recommend checking out here for a precise breakdown of just how significant piracy can be. (And for a very inexpensive game!) A quick breakdown is provided showing the following information:
Punch Club appeared on torrents within hours of launch
For every sale on PC there are 4 pirates
For every Android sale there are 12 pirates
For every iOS sale there are 2 pirates
tinyBuild also notes that localizing the game for Western Europe helped piracy to sale ratio, and recommends all publishers do the same.
It's interesting to see just how rampant piracy still is, and it's a shame to see that in a case like this, while the game certainly hasn't been unsuccessful, the majority of players didn't end up buying it at all.
