Microsoft announced this week a new app for the Xbox One, going wide release sometime this fall, called the Media Player. Simply put, it accesses and plays media files - movies, music, pictures, etc. - directly from a USB-accesible device or through a home DLNA server. Here's the preview video, which Major Nelson posted alongside a host of other updates rolling out to the Xbox One's Preview Members, who test out new features before everyone else.
As mentioned, such an application was widely requested upon the Xbox One's initial release, and for some this is going to put Micrsoft's console at the head of their must-buy list. For a full list of compatible file types, head over to Major Nelson's blog.
Also going out to Preview Members (which generally indicates an update planned for soon wide release) are improvements to the party system, a Friends section on the home screen, the ability to stream TV to Smartglass devices and smaller tweaks. Again, Major Nelson has the full details on those.
