Something to build on.
Microsoft's Xbox Elite Wireless Controller at $149.99, has a premium price. I think it's worth it (see here), and I'm not alone. The controller launched late last October, and came with a shortage that seemed last through the year. At E3 2016, Microsoft announced a new 'Gears of War' flavored version.

While there are not one but two Xbox One consoles on the way, and a whole new push for Xbox gaming on the PC (like with Play Anywhere), the Xbox Elite Controller stands alone as an announced or produced premium first party controller.
Why just this week, I was playing 'Shovel Knight' on Windows 10 with a Xbox One Lunar White controller, and I wished it had a better d-pad. Fortunately, it was easy enough to swap in a Xbox Elite controller and immediately upgrade that d-pad feel.

Time will tell, but the relative success of the Xbox Elite controller does seem to indicate that there is an audience willing the shell out for higher quality first party peripherals.
