Free beta access for current PC players.
This weekend, Minecon landed in London for a couple days' worth of 'Minecraft' news. Along with the announcement of some planned features (dual wielding, anyone?) and the reveal of Telltale's 'Minecraft: Story Mode,' Mojang and Microsoft have announced plans for a new version of the blockbuster game, 'Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition.'
With the latest update for Microsoft's operating system dropping at the end of the month, 'Minecraft' is taking the opportunity to launch a new addition to the game's many, many ports. The 'Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition' Beta will launch the same day as the Windows 10 upgrade, July 29.
Current 'Minecraft' Windows players will be able to download the 'Windows 10 Edition' free from the Windows 10 store as soon as they update their operating system. New players with Windows 10 will be able to pick up the beta for a reduced price of $10. All beta players, though, will receive free updates as development progresses and will be able to upgrade to the full version for no extra charge once it leaves beta.
Some features of 'Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition' Beta include eight-player multiplayer, compatibility with the game's extant 'Pocket Edition,' three different controller options, and a built-in video capture system.
