"Deckbuilding brought to life."
After a successful 2013 Kickstarter and an Early Access tour on Steam, Defiant Development's 'Hand of Fate' has come to both the Xbox One and PS4. The hybrid rogue-like/action-RPG/deck builder has the player assemble a deck and then enter into a dnagerous world.
Set in a cabin on the edge of the world, Hand of Fate thrusts players into a game of life and death with a dealer intent on their demise. Gamers start by building a deck of equipment, enemies, encounters, loot and surprises - then play it. Some cards present players with game-changing choices, reminiscent of a tabletop RPG. Other cards require gamers to fight for their lives against terrifying mythical creatures. When this occurs the title switches to third-person perspective and has an action-adventure combat system.
When the early and often time comes to fight, that deck becomes a fully 3D set of combat options, which, when combined with the roguelike nature of the game, has the player trying to make the most out of their options in every moment. With no two playthroughs the same, players then will want to spend some time refining their decks before once more entering into breach.
Fortunately, for PS4 and Xbox One players, 'Hand of Fate' was built with the controller in mind. At $19.99 and a healthy 1080p, 'Hand of Fate' might be the smartest way yet to scratch that combined deckbuilding/roguelike/third person action itch to date.
Be warned though. Early Access players have described the 'Hand of Fate' as addicting, and Defiant Development already has expansion DLC in the works.
