Mod support up and running, but due to get much more serious.
'Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth' is just barely out (check out the review here), but Firaxis is already talking about going beyond 'Beyond Earth' with full mod support. As of now, the game supports Firetuner (for debugging), Mod Buddy, and Nexus. Mod Buddy is Firaxis own Mod management tool and is used to organize art, Lua, and XML modifications. With Mod Buddy, it's a simple matter to take a mod and upload it as a single file into Steam Workshop. Nexus, meanwhile, is the modification art production pipeline.
But this is only beginning, World Builder support is coming in the future, which means those custom art assets from Nexus will have custom maps and tiles to populate. All of these modding features, which will enable users to get access to tons of community developed content, is free and is basically ancillary to owning the game.
