Forced out of development.
Disney Interactive has shut down the browser-based, multiplayer flight combat sim 'Star Wars: Attack Squadrons' beta, indicating the game wasn't meeting expectations. The developer has chosen to concentrate on other 'Star Wars' titles, shuttering development completely.
The official statement from the game's homepage:
"We want to thank all of the fans who participated in the closed beta of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons. After much consideration, we have decided to cease development so that we can focus on other Star Wars game experiences. We truly appreciate the time you spent engaging in the beta."
Though it doesn't seem a title many will miss, perhaps this means the new 'Star Wars Battlefront' over in development at DICE will see a little more love. It's one of the few 'Star Wars' games known to be in development right now. The other distinct possibility is mobile title, 'Tiny Death Star,' a 'Tiny Tower' spin-off, will get even better. Of course, "other 'Star Wars' titles" encompasses a whole bunch of unknown things too.
Since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, the game development sector LucasArts has been relegated to licensing duties for the 'Star Wars' properties. 'Star Wars: Attack Squadrons' had been under development by Area 52 Games.
