A few classics, a whole lot of....something.
Update: Our initial post on the 24 revealed 'Guitar Hero Live' songs indicated that this was the game's full setlist, however, Activision has followed up and explained that these songs only make up the first playable set in the game, and that are many more songs are still to be revealed.
Activision has finally revealed some 24 songs for 'Guitar Hero Live' today. These 24 tracks are the first of "hundreds" expected for the game, and Activision will be announcing more on a weekly basis.
From Activision,
We're officially starting to roll out the track list for Guitar Hero Live. Below you'll find the first set of songs that will be playable in the game, including hardcore tracks that Guitar Hero fans will love from Alter Bridge, Pierce the Veil and System of a Down, plus Black Veil Brides, Sleigh Bells and The Pretty Reckless, as well as classics from Judas Priest and Pantera. With hundreds of songs in the game, fans will also get to rock out to songs from Rage Against the Machine, Green Day, The Rolling Stones and Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as songs that take a new twist on the classic Guitar Hero rock, such as The Killers, The Black Keys and Fall Out Boy.
Guitar Hero Live Initial Set List (first playable songs in game):
The Black Keys - "Gold on the Ceiling"
Blitz Kids - "Sometimes"
Ed Sheeran - "Sing"
Fall Out Boy - "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)”
Gary Clark, Jr. - "Don't Owe You a Thang"
Green Day - "Nuclear Family"
The Killers - “When You Were Young"
The Lumineers - "Ho Hey"
My Chemical Romance - "Na Na Na"
Pierce the Veil - "King for a Day (feat. Kellin Quinn)"
The Rolling Stones - "Paint it Black"
Skrillex - "Bangarang"
The War on Drugs - "Under the Pressure"
Black Veil Brides - "In The End"
Rage Against the Machine - "Guerrilla Radio"
Judas Priest - "Breaking the Law"
Pantera - "Cowboys From Hell"
Sleigh Bells - "Bitter Rivals"
System of a Down - "Chop Suey!"
Alter Bridge - "Cry of Achilles"
Alt-J - "Left Hand Free"
Broken Bells - "Leave It Alone"
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Higher Ground"
The Pretty Reckless - "Going to Hell"
So, let's unpack a little: One verifiable classic ("Paint It Black", which was in 'Guitar Hero III' already), a couple of decent metal hits (except "Cowboys From Hell" was already in 'Guitar Hero 1', and one day, the world will remember there's more than one System of a Down song. Looking at you, 'Mortal Kombat X' commercial. Looking at you.), one 90's rock track ('Higher Ground'....which was also in 'Guitar Hero 1'), and a whole lot of stuff you've probably heard over the speakers in front of a Spencer's at the mall at some point in the last five years.
Still, Activision did say the aim was for accessibility, and mall rock is what it is because it is that easy to digest. And for those purposes, mission is pretty much accomplished. It's a setlist betting the farm on casual players. We'll see if casual players will do the same.
