The franchise rights alone will make Activision rich beyond their wildest dreams.
According to a quick blurb in Retail Merchandiser--i.e. the folks who figure out where the real money from the movie is made--Activision is apparently hard at work on a new 'Ghostbusters' game set to hit at or around the same time as Paul Feig's reboot on July 15th.
There's no specific details on the game just yet, like whether it's going to include the new female team or not--fingers crossed there. The sooner we get Kate McKinnon: the Video Game, the better--though it's most definitely coming to both PS4 and Xbox One. No word on who the developer is or if Activision's making it in-house. The studio that made the (very underrated) 2009 game, Terminal Reality, has closed its doors, so we know Activision didn't run back to that well. So, right now, the game's a pretty solid question mark, which is about where we stand on the movie too, since, somehow, we're 5 months from release, shooting wrapped last year, and we haven't even gotten a teaser for this flick. So, we'll wait and see. In the meantime, though, if you get desperate for a new 'Ghostbusters' game, there are options....
