Big budgets, big games and solid launches.
Once again, 'Call of Duty' has ascended. After only one month on sale, 'Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare' has overtaken all games from this past year to become the top-selling game in the US in 2014. One of the games that 'Call of Duty' passed up in its sales blitz is the second best-selling game of 2014 in the US, Activision's own 'Destiny.' Naturally, 'Call of Duty' is one of the biggest names in the biz, and though 'Destiny' is a brand-new ip, the game carries with it the reputation of 'Halo' developer Bungie.
As Activision enjoys the dominance of those two titles, there is one more to recognize. 'Skylanders Trap Team' has helped the 'Skylanders' franchise to become the top-selling video game franchise of the year, though that description suggests that it was the sale of Skylanders figures day after day that was the biggest factor.
For 'Advanced Warfare' and 'Destiny,' it's obvious that both games have large fan bases, as well as plenty of detractors. And yet, as 2014 draws to a close, it's worth noting that these hugely successful games launched with a minimum of technical and network issues.
