Get ready for a few years of tech demos. Let's see if they can beat the 'Gears of War' meat cube.
Game engines are the kind of thing that the general public doesn't know or care about but hardcore game enthusiasts get really excited over. They're the building blocks to games and they help determine what the next generation of titles is going to look and play like.
Epic has been working on Unreal Engine 4 for some time and is going to be showing it off later this year - we're guessing that means the Game Developer's Conference in March. "People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have," says Epic Games president Mark Rein.
Of course, there won't be any games that use it for a few years, so get ready to drool over the graphical fidelity of tech demos for a while.
