After a months-long dearth of new HD DVD title announcements, Universal Studios Home Entertainment today said it will release two catalogue titles on April 17 -- 'The Jerk' and 'The Game.'
Both titles will hit the format with the usual 1080p/VC-1 encoded video transfers and Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 surround tracks. Extras look to be slim, however, with theatrical trailers on each, plus "lost" footage and an interactive tutorial on 'The Jerk.' (Note that 'The Game' will feature none of the bonus features found on the extensive Criterion laserdisc edition released a few years back.)
Universal has set a list price of $29.98 list price for 'The Game,' and $34.98 for 'The Jerk,' which will also be a HD DVD/DVD combo release.
Though Universal's return to announced HD DVD titles is certainly good news for format supporters, the studio's upcoming slate of new releases remains surprisingly thin. Beyond this week's HD DVD debut of 'Brokeback Mountain,' there are only two other announced titles set to street from the studio before this April 17 wave -- 'Half Baked' and 'Hollywoodland' this February. Not exactly the strongest support for what is now the only major studio left exclusively backing HD DVD -- we hope to see that change soon.
In any case, we've added full specs for both 'The Jerk' and 'The Game' to our complete HD DVD Release Schedule under April 13.
