'ZombiU' Director: "The team is working hard on a prototype" for a ZombiU sequel.
In an article on Games Industry International, the Wii U's many third party failings are outlined point-by-point. Contained in this "Don't count Nintendo out, but..." article is an excerpt specific to 'ZombiU' and the possibility of a sequel to 'ZombiU.'
"Yves Guillemot, Chairman and CEO of Ubisoft, is typically one of the biggest proponents of new systems, but betting big on the Wii U didn't work out well for the company. ZombiU, one of the most popular launch titles for the system with players, was not profitable, he says. Not even close. As such, he says, there are no plans (or even desire) for a sequel."
One important factor with regards 'ZombiU' and profitability is that the game had a troubled development cycle. The game was originally set to be a multi-platform title, before being scrapped and ultimately retooled for the Wii U. The end result reflects the troubled development, but presumably, a sequel could reach a more finished state with considerably less funding.
What is odd though is that in a Tweet in May from the director of 'ZombiU,' Ubisoft Montpellier's Jean-Phillippe Caro, it seemed clear that a sequel was being prototyped. In response to the question "Can we expect a ZombiU sequel," Caro tweeted, "thank you for your interest in zombiu. The team is working hard on a prototype."
Ultimately, 'ZombiU' is now a brand that Ubisoft would be wise to develop for at some point, but if Ubisoft CEO's comments are genuine, it seems that a new 'ZombiU' title is back on the shelf for now.
