Ubisoft's yearly 'Assassin's Creed' seems to be slumming into pirate waters.
'Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag' is the sixth console title for the 'Assassin's Creed' franchise, and when it releases this fall, it will be the sixth console title from the franchise in six years.
The game's setting is quite awkwardly set in an era prior to 'Assassin's Creed III,' (e.g. 1715,) but will nevertheless be considered a sequel in the story due to the over-arching modern day storyline involving the Animus and ancestors of assassins.
With the latest trailer highlighting what seem to really be the meat of the new game, the era of pirates and its correlating gameplay, the franchise is being called into question. The growing perception that the franchise has been water downed ever since the second game seems to be shifting towards an issue of Ubisoft's overall direction. Simply put, why not give the franchise a rest, and just develop a new IP for a pirates' game?
So long as the series continues to sell well, while other titles miss sales targets, it is likely that the yearly releases will continue regardless of how sprawling a reach must be to go from sequel to sequel/prequel. 'Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag' is coming to the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PC and PS4 on October 29th, and is available for pre-order.
