A pair of rumors today would seem to indicate that high-def holdout DreamWorks may finally be on the verge of announcing Blu-ray and HD DVD support with a day-and-date release of 'Dreamgirls.'
First, a spot appeared this week on the main page of www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com, the official promotional website of the HD DVD Forum, under the rotating "New Releases" banner.
Though no specs, street date or other details are given, the ad touts 'Dreamgirls' as "Coming soon to HD DVD."
Given that DreamWorks is now owned by parent Paramount, which currently supports both HD DVD and Blu-ray, it is fair to assume that should the arrival of 'Dreamgirls' turn out to be true, a Blu-ray release would be imminent as well.
The rumor mill continued to build steam after a "prebook" date of March 20 for 'Dreamgirls' -- on both HD DVD and Blu-ray -- was circulated today by the studio to a variety of online and storefront retailers. No hard street date is given, though price is listed at $39.95 for each version.
At press time, Paramount Home Entertainment still has not returned calls regarding the 'Dreamgirls' HD DVD advertisement, nor any home video release. The film currently has no standard-def DVD street date set.
However, an announcement is expected shortly after this Sunday's Academy Award telecast, in which 'Dreamgirls' is nominated for a leading eight nods.
We'll certainly keep you posted on news as this story develops. And in the meantime, we've added a listing for 'Dreamgirls' to the "Release Dates Pending" section of both our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule.
