Requires a Wii Remote.
Nintendo has released new firmware for the Wii U, version 4.0.0 U, and with it comes new functionality for the system's Wii Mode. Now when playing Wii software, users can output the audio and video to the Wii U's GamePad, in essence allowing Wii Games to be played without a TV.
This new functionality does not enable the Wii U GamePad's controls in Wii games, and players will still need the Wii Remotes, Classic Controllers, etc. The Wii U GamePad does however include its own built-in sensor bar.
After the update, when selecting Wii Mode, users will have the option to either output to the TV only or output to both the TV and GamePad.
Nintendo has noted in the update added support for Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound for Wii software, as well as advanced audio configurations for the Wii U with the ability to output sound through both HDMI and analog connections.
One other addition includes the option to "automatically receive recommended software," which when combined with new standby settings, should give users more power over the Wii U when away.
Nintendo noted today that the new update is required to obtain the newly announced DLC for 'Pikmin 3.'
