The future of the 'Need for Speed' seems very uncertain.
Ghost Games UK, who recently shipped 'Need for Speed: Rivals,' has been hit with major layoffs. Contract employees have been let go, while some employees have the choice to either take severance or aid the latter development of Visceral's latest project, said to be a 'Battlefield' offshoot. The downsizing means that the next 'Need for Speed,' which Ghost Games was working on, is being shelved for now.
Former 'Need for Speed' and 'Burnout' developer, Criterion Games, has already seen severe turmoil this year, with founders Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry departing EA while much of the staff went to Ghost to work on 'Rivals.'
With Ghost Games on the ropes, it would appear that EA's insistence on a annual 'Need for Speed' title will at least be pumping the brakes.
