As for the "random" selection, "We considered a variety of things."
'Killer Instinct,' the free-to-play, but please don't call it free-to-play Xbox One launch day fighter, is being offered for free for select Xbox Live Users. How do you offer a free-to-play game for free? In this case, it means that instead of only getting character, Jango, for free, the entire roster, a $20 value, will be free.
Microsoft sent the email out this morning, "You're a fan of ours and we're a fan of yours... We've unlocked all characters so you can hit the ground running." The offer does require an unlock process that will be explained on November 22nd.
Naturally, many longtime Xbox Live users are not thrilled to have been overlooked by this offer/recognition.
In reply to the seeming randomness of the off, Microsoft replied, "We considered a variety of things like Gamerscore, LIVE tenure, & other factors in markets where #XboxOne is available."
With the free-to-play fighter, a remake/modern sequel of the SNES era Rare fighter not exactly having massive numbers of players vowing to buy the full roster day one, the roster offer should help to get people playing the game; however, a pr backlash from heavy XBL users who feel left out may motivate Microsoft to modify their selection offer between now and launch day.
