In addition to the chunk of change teams can get for winning events, Riot is implementing salaries to make 'League of Legends' a real career option.
Riot is making a big push for eSports dominance and their latest announcement is something that's going to be good for the fans, but even more for the players. The company promises the biggest prize pool in the history of eSports and "millions of dollars on the line."
Where it gets really interesting is in the way teams are getting paid. There are, of course, big prizes for winning each tournament. Even bigger though, is the opportunity to pull in salaries instead of just one-off prizes. Riot says that the implimentation of salaries is to "ensure 'League of Legends' is a sustainable career choice for professional players." Just how those will be doled out and who will get them is still quite a mystery.
Just like traditional sports, the new season of 'League of Legends' will feature both a regular season and playoffs that culminate in a world championship match.
The new season will kick off in early 2013, with the results of this year's regional matches directly influencing who will pre-qualify for next year's league.
