1999 Mode yields a classic player perspective and can be unlocked immediately.
Today's launch of 'BioShock Infinite' will introduce many players to Irrational Games' leg-up program, that is, a game designed to help the player by providing whatever resources are needed. Running out of health, money, or salt? The game will provide. Being shot and dying frequently? The game will provide. Don't want to mess with powers and prefer just to shoot everything? The game will accommodate you. The hope is that players will not become frustrated, and will experience at least one play through and thereby not feel cheated.
On the other hand, not every player desires such assistance. In fact, the gameplay experience can be lessened by too much coddling. If resources are replaced instantly whenever wasted and death has no penalty, the game can become an undemanding hell worthy of 'The Twilight Zone.' For this less marketed demographic, developer Irrational Game has provided 1999 Mode. From Irrational Games, "BioShock Infinite’s 1999 Mode will feature an especially demanding gaming experience, forcing you to examine your decisions while going through your adventure in Columbia. With every choice you make, there are irreversible implications, and if your choices guide you down a path not suited to your play style, you will suffer for it."
The is just one catch though, normally the game has to be beaten with full-on game assistance before this more challenging mode becomes available. Here again, Irrational Games has provided a worthy workaround, the Konami Code. By inputting the eighties era cheat code of Konami origin and cultish remembrance, 1999 Mode becomes instantly accessible.
