The Windows 8 gaming tablet pre-orders have already exhausted manufacturing capacity.
Razer's Edge Pro, an NVIDIA Optimus-powered gaming tablet, does not yet have a release date, but after less than two weeks, pre-orders have already outstripped both existing stock and "foreseeable manufacturing capacity." The Edge, the lower spec sibling to the Edge Pro is still available "in limited quantities."
The crowdsourced tablet design has several multiple gaming configurations beyond normal tablets. The most striking configuration adds a controller attachments to the left and ride of the tablet, but by attaching the docking station, the tablet instantly supports PC game controllers and outputs via HDMI. The tablet also supports a keyboard dock that gives it a laptop-like form factor.
Razer is offering the tablet in two configurations, the Edge, and the Edge Pro. The Edge features an Intel Core i5 with 4GB of DDR3 with a 64GB SSD. The Edge Pro features an i7 with 8GB of DDR3 with either a 128 or 256 GB SSD. Both systems feature a hybrid Optimus graphic solution with an Intel HD4000 and 2GB DDR3 NVIDIA GT 640M LE, and a 10.1" multi-touch IPS display that runs at 1355 x 768 coupled with Windows 8.
From Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan, "We've had to stop taking pre-orders for the Razer Edge Pro as the pre-orders have gone beyond our forseeable manufacturing capacity (i.e. all stock is sold out for the months to come). We're doing all we can to get manufacturing lines up and running so please bear with us.
We're doing everything we can to get more units out in the coming months. We appreciate the patience."
The Razor Edge was well received at CES and won CNET's Best in show for its category. The Razer Edge retails for $999.99 and the Edge Pro begins at $1299.00. Those prices do not include the dock or controller accessories.
