Yup, more scalable OLED displays that you can’t have.
Alright, so let’s get it out of the way. Yes, a 149” OLED display is impressive. Yes we’d love to have a giant screen OLED in our homes. And yes, Mitsubishi, we even love looking at OLEDs we can’t have. But c’mon, make one for us already!
They’ll be showing the display for the first time at Integrated Systems Europe next week. It’s size is impressive, but the actual resolution is a bit disappointing. At only 1088 x 640 it’s not yet in the 720p range, but Mitsubishi says that the OLED technology means that their display will look good even up close.
The giant screen is, in reality, made up of smaller 10cm screens joined together at the edge. Mitsubishi sees this modular approach as the future of OLED. By creating smaller screens, they can keep costs down while making screens versatile.
Commercial applications for the display are seemingly endless. You can put the smaller OLED sets up in any configuration you want so, for example, you could make a giant Mickey Mouse head shaped OLED. Expect to start seeing these around at places with money to burn and tourists to attract if the demo goes well.
As far as OLEDs for home use though, it looks like we’ll have to keep waiting.
