Blizzard says that WoW will stick with leaving the game free until level 20 but that's as far as it goes.
The MMO market is primarily made up of three different models: free-to-play, games that were once subscription based but are now free-to-play and 'World of Warcraft'. It seems that Blizzard's game is the only one that is managing to stay afloat as a subscription model and there's been quite a bit of speculation about whether or not that will change.
Game producer John Levarge says that there are no plans to change that. "We looked at whether Level 20 would give you a good sense of what our game is, and we think it does," he says.
'StarCraft 2,' on the other hand, could end up switching over. "That's definitely an option for us at some point down the road," says designer Justin Browder. "I don't think there's any reason why we wouldn't, except to make sure we do it properly, that we don't make any mistakes, and that we are supporting the fans the way we're supposed to."
